10 Amazing crochet patterns for beginners

Once you have learned a few basic stitches many of us are eager to get going and start crocheting some projects, once you start and begin to gain more confidence you won't want to stop.

This is a round up of some beginner crochet patterns, that are great for practicing those crochet stitches.

Then once you have a few of the basic stitches mastered this range of patterns are perfect practice pieces that can be made up into blankets, pillows, scarves, shawls, bags and much much more.

Project 1 - Simple Square Motif

In project 1 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet and a slip stitch, work in rows, turn the corner, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 2 - All Square Motif

In project 2 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch and treble crochet, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 3 - Round Square Motif
In project 3 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet, half treble crochet, treble crochet and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, increase, change colour, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 4 - Patchwork Motif
In project 4 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch and half treble crochet, work in rows, finish/fasten off and weave ends & sew together.

Project 5 - African Flower Motif
In project 5 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet, half treble crochet, treble crochet, double treble crochet and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 6 - Heart Motif
In project 6 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet, half treble crochet, treble crochet, double treble crochet, triple treble crochet, quadruple treble crochet and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 7 - Traditional Granny Motif
In project 7 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, treble crochet, and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 8 - Granny Flower Motif
In project 8 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, treble crochet and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 9 - Ripple Motif
In project 9 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet, half treble crochet and a treble crochet, work in rows, change colour, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Project 10 - Chain Flower Motif
In project 10 you will get the opportunity to practice reading patterns, holding the hook and yarn, creating a slipknot, doing a yarn over, chain stitch, double crochet, half treble crochet, treble crochet, and a slip stitch, work in rounds, work in a chain space, change colour, increase, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Forget Me Not Flower Pattern

I posted a few weeks ago about a pattern I wrote years ago to raise money for the Alzheimer's society, well I have finally found some time to convert the pattern into a post, you can read more about the background to the pattern here.

Easy UK  & US Terms DK yarn Buttons 4mm hook Scissors Darning needle Approx. 6 cm x 19 cm Not important Chain (ch) Slip stitch(slst) Fasten/Finish off(FO)

Notes:  

For my flowers I used Robin Double knit yarn, flower shade 33 and stem shade 16

Instructions:

Work instructions for both flower and stem using the appropriate colours

Round 1: ch3, 1slst into the first chain (or 2nd ch from the hook) leaving 2 stitches on the hook.

Round 2: Lift off and hold the stitch at the end of the hook, 1slst into the remaining stitch, place the held stitch back onto the hook and 1slst into stitch.

Do not turn.

Tighten your work as you progress by gently pulling the right then left stitches

Round 3: and onwards: Continue by repeating round 2 until the desired length is reached. I like to make my cord a little longer to allow some flexibility when making the loops.

Make up flower: Cut off yarn leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold the cord into 5 equal loops. Thread the yarn needle through the loops catching each loop; make sure you catch the last two stitches securely. Unravel any additional rows as required. Thread the needle. Pass through the yarn through all loops twice to ensure secure. FO and weave ends. Using a single strand of green yarn, sew on a button to the front of the flower stitching diagonally across.

Make up stem: Cut off yarn and pass through the last two stitches. FO and weave ends.

Make up posy: Stitch the stem to the back of the flower securely. Make two flowers. Knot together the two flowers as in the picture. Make a small stitch in the two flowers to secure together.

Detailed Instructions:

Round 1

Create a slip knot

Ch3

1slst into the 1st chain (or 2nd ch from the hook)

2 stitches on the hook

Round 2

Lift off and hold the stitch at the end of the  hook

1slst into the 1 remaining stitch, by doing yarn over and pulling through the stitch on the hook

Place the held stitch back on the hook

1slst into the stitch, by doing yarn over and passing through the last stitch on the hook

Do not Turn The back of the work looks as the picture to the left Tighten your work as you progress by gently pulling the right then left stitches

Round 3 and onwards

Continue by repeating round 2 until the desired length is reached

My flower length is approximately 40cm long I like to make my cord a little longer to allow some flexibility when making loops Cut off yarn leaving a long tail for sewing

Fold cord into 5 equal loops. Thread the yarn needle through the loops catching each loop, make sure you catch the last two stitches

Unravel any additional rows as required. Thread the needle. Pass through the yarn through all loops

Pass through the yarn again to ensure secure

FO and weave ends.

The made up flower is approximately 6cm wide Using a single strand of green yarn, sew on a button to the front of the flower stitching diagonally across

To make stem:  Work instructions for flower to make stem My stem length is approximately 25cm long Cut off yarn and pass through the last two stitches. FO and weave ends To make posy:  Stitch the stem to the back of the flower securely. Make two flowers. Knot together the two flowers as in the picture. Make a small stitch in the two flowers to secure together. Made up posy is approximately 19cm long
