Front & Back Loops Only

The front & back loop only crochet is a variation on a regular stitch except instead of inserting your hook underneath the entire stitch; the hook is inserted under either the front or back loop only. This creates a nice ridged texture, is used to create shaping in amigurumi and can be used to reattach yarn for further detail.

The instructions below show the difference between both loops, back loops and front loops.

Both Loops

When you look at your crochet stitches you can see that the two loops together make a ‘V’ shape, normally when you work a stitch you will work into both loops so that the hook sits underneath both loops of the ‘v’ shape, as shown in the pictures below.

Front Loops

Front loop only crochet is abbreviated as FLO. To work FLO crochet, you will insert your hook through only the loop of the ‘v’ that is closest to you. You will insert the hook from the front of the work but you will only pick up one loop, as shown in the pictures below.

Back Loops

Back loop only crochet is abbreviated as BLO. To work BLO crochet, you will insert your hook through only the loop of the ‘v’ that is furthest away from you. You will insert the hook from the front of the work to the centre of the stitch and pick up one loop, as shown in the pictures below.
