Bonus Christmas Patterns

Why not get into the Christmas spirit and put your crochet skills into practice with these Christmas makes.

BONUS PROJECT 

These Christmas designs are based on the traditional granny motif pattern. 

The traditional granny square is a versatile piece of crochet; these are just a few ideas of how this pattern can be used.  

UK Terms

TRADITIONAL GRANNY MOTIF PATTERN

Techniques used: Reading patterns, holding hook and yarn, slipknot, yarn over, chain stitch, treble crochet, slip stitch, work in rounds, work in chain space, increase, change colour, finish/fasten off and weave ends.

Instructions: 

Ch5, join to the first ch with slst to form ring. 

Note: Begin each round with a ch3 which counts as the first tr of the round.

Round 1: Into the ring ch3, 2tr then ch2, *tr3 then ch2* 3 times, join with slst into the top of ch3 from the beginning of the round.  FO.  (4 groups of 3tr not counting ch2 sps)

Round 2: Change colour slst into any corner ch2 sp, ch3, then 2tr, ch2, 3tr, into the same space to create the corner, then *3tr in each of the next sps, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) to create the corner* rep from * to * 3 times, 3tr in each of the next sps, join with slst into the top of ch3 from the beginning of the round.  FO.  (6 sts per side)

Round 3-7: Repeat round 2.    Round 3 = 9 sts per side

                                                  Round 4 = 12 sts per side

                                                  Round 5 = 15 sts per side

                                                  Round 6 = 18 sts per side

                                                  Round 7 = 21 sts per side

Round 8+: Repeat round 2 to make a bigger square. 


CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATION

Star

Instructions: Using yellow yarn Ch5, join to the first ch with slst to form ring. 

Round 1: Into the ring ch3, then 14tr, join with slst into the top of ch3 from the beginning of the round.

Round 2: *dc and tr into the same st, then ch2, slst into the first ch, tr and dc into the next stitch, slst into the next stitch* rep from * to * to create 4 more points.  FO.

Bauble 1

Instructions: Using your chosen yarn Ch5, join to the first ch with slst to form ring. 

Round 1: Into the ring ch3, then 11tr, join with slst into the top of ch3 from the beginning of the round.  FO.

Bauble 2

Instructions: Using your chosen yarn Ch5, join to the first ch with slst to form ring. 

Round 1: Into the ring ch2, then 8htr, join with slst into the top of ch3 from the beginning of the round.  FO.

Bauble 3

Instructions: Using your chosen yarn Ch5, join to the first ch with slst to form ring. 

Round 1: Into the ring 6dc, join with slst into the top of dc from the beginning of the round.  FO.

Tree stump

Instructions: Using your chosen yarn make ch11

Row 1: Work dc in 2nd ch from the hook, dc in each ch to the end of row. Turn.  

Row 2: Ch1, dc into each st to the end of the row. Turn.

Row 3 to 8 approx: Rep row 2 until desired size.

Assembly: Make up each square.  Pin together in your desired layout. Stitch together.  Stitch on tree stump & embellish with circles for baubles and a star for the top.


GIFT CARD HOLDER

Assembly: Make up square.  Pin together in your desired layout. Stitch together & embellish with a ribbon bow.

Instructions: Using your chosen yarn make ch34 (includes ch3 turning chain)

Start by working in a row

Row 1: Work tr in 4th ch from the hook, tr in each ch to the end of row.  (31 sts)

Round 2: Continue by working in a round.  Change colour, join into the space between the last two trebles of row1.  Ch3, 2tr into the same space, ch2, into the same space 3tr, then *sk 3 trebles, then into the space between the trebles, 3tr*, (e.g. between the 4th and 5th Trebles), rep from * to * to the end of the row.  The last 3 trebles there is 1 treble left at the end of the row, *2 ch2 then 3tr into the same space*2 rep *2 to *2 again to form the corner, then rep * to * to the end of the row, the last 3 trebles form the last corner ch2 then slst to join to the ch3 at the beginning of the round.

Round 3: Change colour, join into the ch2 space from round2, Ch3, 2tr into the same space, into the next ch2 space 3tr, ch2, 3tr, then *sk 3 trebles, then into the space between the groups of 3trebles, 3tr*, rep from * to * to the end of the row.  *2Then into the ch2 space 3tr, ch2, 3tr *2 rep *2 to *2 again to form the corner, then rep * to * to the end of the row, the last 3 trebles should be into the ch2 space from round 2, then ch2 and slst to join to the ch3 at the beginning of the round.  FO.



Assembly: Make up enough ribbons to make your desired length, first stitch the opposite ends of one ribbon together to form a hoop, then pass the next ribbon through the centre of the hoop and stitch together its opposite ends, and repeat for each ribbon.

Round 3: Change colour, join into the ch2 space from round2, Ch3, 2dc into the same space, into the next ch2 space 3dc, ch2, 3dc, then *sk 3 doubles, then into the space between the groups of 3doubles, 3dc*, rep from * to * to the end of the row.  *2Then into the ch2 space 3dc, ch2, 3dc *2 rep *2 to *2 again to form the corner, then rep * to * to the end of the row, the last 3 doubles should be into the ch2 space from round 2, then ch2 and slst to join to the ch3 at the beginning of the round.  FO.
